Bilingual
You reported that “More Latinos Take SAT, but Scores Lagging” (Sept. 2). Then you went on to emphasize the “lag” and forgot about the “more.” “More” is the first step toward becoming better. I’m pleased to see greater numbers of students willing to take this test. Most of those Latinos are bilingual and many are also biliterate and bicultural. I’ll take a tiny sag in scores for now as we produce bilingual individuals.
Our nation has never produced bilingual adults through traditional education programs. Yet we envy Europeans who are bilingual or multilingual. We dismiss our own talented folks who move fluidly between two languages and two cultures. We should celebrate them.
