An Air Force pilot was killed when his F-16 crashed during a training mission, authorities said over the weekend.

The plane went down about 3 p.m. Saturday in a remote wooded area of the Avon Park Bombing Range in central Florida. The pilot’s name was not released pending notification of his family, Lt. Col. Bobby D’Angelo, a spokesman for the Homestead Air Reserve Station, said Saturday.

The plane was flying with three other F-16s in a tactical formation at the time of the crash. The planes were dropping 25-pound “bombs” that release puffs of smoke when they hit the ground.
