Police Send Report on Track Coach to Grand Jury

The Pasadena Police Department has sent a confidential report to the Los Angeles County Grand Jury examining allegations that school officials ignored complaints of inappropriate behavior between a former high school track coach and his students, officials said.

The grand jury in June had requested that police investigate allegations that Pasadena Unified school officials ignored misconduct complaints against ex-John Muir High coach Clyde Turner.

Turner, who was arrested in April, is expected to stand trial on three felony charges of child molestation involving two members of the Muir High track team. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich had asked the grand jury to examine allegations that district officials ignored early warnings that Turner may have misbehaved with students.

A hearing is scheduled for Friday to introduce evidence from six people who came forward after Turner’s arrest and say they were molested by him. The parent of one former student, according to court papers, complained to district officials about Turner in 1984.

School district officials have said they had no reason to be suspicious of Turner, who is a nationally recognized coach.
