One boat trip, two festivals: Catalina’s city of Avalon has two offerings this weekend for island hoppers. The two-day 40th annual Catalina Festival of Art will showcase art, photography, crafts, jewelry and sculpture along the length of Crescent Avenue. Saturday’s Third Annual Wine Tasting Festival offers samples of 57 varieties of wine. The proceeds benefit the Catalina Island Women’s Forum, an outreach nonprofit organization that donates time and money to projects on domestic violence and women’s health, as well as a student mentoring and scholarship program.

Lend a hand for the 14th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. Cleanups will take place at more than 600 sites on California beaches, bays, rivers, creeks, parks, roadsides and highways. Last year, close to 500,000 volunteers picked up more than 700,000 pounds of trash. Each volunteer will receive a coupon for a free Brita water filtration pitcher as a gift for helping out.

10 am: Children

Children ages 9 to 14 can learn how to produce an old-time radio drama using scripts, sound effects and music at the Museum of Television & Radio’s “Re-Creating Radio Workshops.” The workshops will take participants through the many stages of radio production, including casting, microphone and sound effects training and a cue rehearsal, before putting on a “live” broadcast. The series brings to life stories in the tradition of “Superman” (Saturday and Oct. 24), “The Shadow” (Oct. 17 and Dec. 12), Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” (Dec. 19) and others.

Jack London’s experiences as both an adventurer and intellectual are explored in “The Wisdom of the Trail: Jack London, Author and Adventurer” opening Saturday at the Huntington Library. Best known as the author of “Call of the Wild” “White Fang” and “The Sea Wolf,” London was also an oyster pirate, sailor, socialist and rancher, among other things. The exhibition will focus on the many aspects of London’s life through his personal papers, handwritten manuscripts, letters, photographs and annotated books, some of which have never before been exhibited.
