Trnka’s One-Year Deal Means All on Roster Have Signed

The Ducks got one defenseman back in the fold Wednesday and hope to have a second one skating again by this weekend.

Pavel Trnka signed a one-year contract with the Ducks, ending a three-day absence from training camp. Trnka, who had three goals and seven points in 48 games last season, is expected to join the team for today’s workouts.

Trnka, 22, was the only unsigned player on the Ducks’ 54-man training camp roster.

Meanwhile, the Ducks hope to learn by this weekend what’s wrong with Fredrik Olausson, who has an enlarged spleen and hasn’t been cleared to practice.

Olausson underwent another round of tests Wednesday. “We really don’t know what’s wrong,” General Manager Pierre Gauthier said. “The mood of the doctors is very good, but I don’t want to speculate.”

Defenseman Jason Marshall was the lightning rod for the bad blood between the Ducks and the Chicago Blackhawks last season--at least that was the Blackhawks’ opinion.

Marshall jumped Chicago defenseman Chris Chelios near the end of the Ducks’ 4-0 loss Nov. 19 at the Arrowhead Pond. It wasn’t much of a fight, more like a wrestling match.

But the Blackhawks delivered a payback to Duck captain Paul Kariya in the form of Gary Suter’s dubious cross check to the jaw in the Ducks’ 4-3 overtime victory Feb. 1.

“Marshall? Last year, I hated him,” said Craig Hartsburg, who coached the Blackhawks the last three seasons before being hired by the Ducks this summer. “He’s a stand-up guy. I have a great deal of respect for him. He’s one of the real character guys here.”
