Bay’s Protected Habitat Open to Cleanup Volunteers
Volunteers can don their dingiest dungarees Saturday to help clean Upper Newport Bay.
As part of a statewide effort to remove debris from coastal areas, volunteers will collect trash on more than 900 acres of Back Bay from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The annual Upper Newport Bay Clean-Up Day is the one time people are allowed to visit protected habitat, said Nancy Bruland, a ranger with the county Harbors, Beaches and Parks Department.
“We kind of waive the rules and get as much out of there as we can,” Bruland said. “We get everybody’s urban runoff.”
Participants can pick up bags, plastic gloves and recycling data sheets at Newport Dunes Resort, 1131 Backbay Drive. Volunteers will be bused to a work site.
Volunteers who make arrangements ahead can go directly to an outpost.
In last year’s one-day effort, 1,000 volunteers removed about 40,000 pounds of garbage.
Participants are encouraged to wear old shoes, long-sleeved shirts, pants and hats and bring sunscreen. Refreshments will be provided.
