Tyler, LSU Pass SEC Road Test at Auburn

Herb Tyler threw a game-clinching six-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Kipps with 5:27 left and No. 7 Louisiana State capitalized on four Auburn turnovers for a 31-19 victory Saturday at Auburn, Ala.

With LSU leading, 25-19, Chris Cummings intercepted a pass by Auburn quarterback Ben Leard on Auburn’s 46-yard line. Kevin Faulk then gained 26 yards in five carries to set up the touchdown for LSU (2-0, 1-0).

LSU jumped out to a 13-0 lead over Auburn (1-2, 1-1) and led, 19-17, at halftime.

No. 12 Georgia 16, Wyoming 9--Champ Bailey did it on both sides of the ball for the Bulldogs, turning a short pass into a 51-yard touchdown and making a spectacular interception as Georgia struggled past the Cowboys in a nonconference game at Athens, Ga.

Freshman Quincy Carter completed 18 of 25 passes for 271 yards but was responsible for two of the four fumbles by Georgia (3-0). The turnovers allowed Wyoming (1-1), an 18-point underdog, to keep it close.

Mississippi 30, Vanderbilt 6--Shane Elam picked off a screen pass and returned it 87 yards to put the game out of reach as the Rebels defeated the Commodores at Nashville, Tenn.

Vanderbilt (0-3, 0-3), which has lost 21 SEC conference games, trailed only 14-6 in the third quarter and had the ball at the Rebel 28 after a blocked punt.

But Elam intercepted the screen pass at the 13 and scored untouched as he put Ole Miss (2-1, 1-1) ahead, 21-6.

Arkansas 44, SMU 17--Clint Stoerner threw three touchdown passes, including an 87-yarder on the game’s first play, and rushed for one as the Razorbacks defeated the Mustangs in a nonconference game before 55,544 at Little Rock, Ark.

The Razorbacks (2-0) defeated the Mustangs for only the third time since SMU (0-3) resurrected its football program after receiving the NCAA death penalty 10 years ago.

Marshall 24, South Carolina 21--Daninelle Derricott’s last-minute interception set up Billy Malashevich’s 37-yard field goal with two seconds left as the Thundering Herd (3-0) finally put away an SEC opponent with a victory at Columbia, S.C.

Only moments before the interception, the Gamecocks (1-2) were starting a final drive of a 21-21 ball game. But quarterback Anthony Wright threw the ball right into Derricott’s hands and he returned it 30 yards into field-goal range.
