The Jacksonville Jaguars learned on Monday that they have lost running back James Stewart and linebacker Bryan Schwartz because of knee injuries suffered in Sunday’s 24-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Stewart’s injury appeared serious, but Coach Tom Coughlin didn’t speculate on whether it would sideline him for the season. He will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee knee today.

Stewart suffered the injury in the first quarter on a tackle by Raven linebacker Peter Boulware. He had to be carried off the field and was wearing a full-leg splint after the game.

Schwartz suffered a strained right knee and will be sidelined three to four weeks.

Cincinnati Bengal cornerback Corey Sawyer will be sidelined for at least a month, and possibly for the season, because of torn cartilage in his left knee.

Sawyer was injured while making a tackle in the Bengals’ 13-6 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He had returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown in overtime against Detroit in Week 2.

Quarterback John Elway, who had to come out of a Denver Bronco game for the second consecutive week because of an injury to his right hamstring, is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at Washington.

Bubby Brister replaced Elway again Sunday and threw two touchdown passes in the Broncos’ 34-17 victory over the Oakland Raiders.

Elway aggravated the hamstring on a bootleg play to the right--the same play that triggered the initial injury in a 42-23 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2.

The Broncos and San Diego Chargers will play an exhibition game at Olympic stadium in Sydney on Aug. 8, 1999. It will be the first major international event at Stadium Australia, the main venue for the 2000 Olympic Games.
