A man was fatally shot early Tuesday morning as he stood by a bank of pay phones in front of a liquor store, Los Angeles police said.

Hector Carrillo, 30, of North Hollywood, was shot about 2:40 a.m. in the 10300 block of Woodman Avenue, staggered to an alley behind the store and died.

An anonymous caller told police that shots had been fired, and investigators sent to the scene found Carrillo dead of a bullet wound to the chest, according to Det. Frank Bishop of the LAPD’s Foothill Division.

Details of the slaying were sketchy Tuesday afternoon, investigators said, because they were having trouble finding witnesses.

Bishop said the shooting was gang-related, but said it was unclear whether the victim was a gang member.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Foothill Division homicide detectives at (818) 834-3115.
