From Times Wire Reports

A proposal to raise the minimum wage by $1 an hour was voted down by the Senate, but supporters of the initiative vowed to campaign on the issue in the upcoming elections. The measure, defeated in a 55-44 vote, would have raised the wage to $6.15 on Jan. 1, 2000. The first 50-cent hike would have taken effect next Jan. 1. Opponents said an increase would hurt small businesses and cause unemployment.
