SAN DIEGO —
A 25-year-old suspected illegal immigrant was shot Thursday by a Border Patrol agent during an attempted hit-and-run in a mountainous area east of San Diego, officials said.
The agent fired one round at a car as the driver tried to run him over to avoid apprehension, officials said. The driver was struck in the chest and taken by helicopter to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Five passengers, all suspected of being illegal immigrants, were taken into custody by the Border Patrol.
