FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--The bass bite has cooled and many are blaming the drop in water temperature. Bluegills and catfish remain fairly active in both reservoirs, biting on meal worms and mackerel, respectively.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass are attacking shad on the surface and biting on most lures, especially in shad pattern. Get there early, though, or you’ll find things slow. The stripers are on the small side, averaging two-three pounds. Catfish are active.

LAKE PIRU--Bass fishing is fair, yielding mostly small fish, with small plastic worms getting most. A 4 1/2-pounder, however, was caught on a night crawler. Trout are deep and somewhat sluggish, but a few are being caught on Power Bait or trolled Needlefish at the dam.

CASITAS LAKE--Trout fishing remains good. David Morrison, Ojai, caught a 3 1/2-pounder and five-fish limits are averaging eight-10 pounds. Night crawlers fished at 40 feet near the dam are best. Top bass, a 9 1/2-pounder by Lenny Kerley, Simi Valley, on a Zara Spook.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout the most active, biting very deep on night crawlers, Power Bait and Needlefish lures at the dam. Jeff McReynolds, Lompoc, caught a 4 1/2-pounder on a night crawler. Largemouth bass are biting sporadically off points at 20-30 feet on plastic worms and crankbaits.

IRVINE LAKE--A 43-pound 10-ounce catfish was caught by Luis Lozano, Compton, on mackerel at Santiago Flats. A 20-pounder was caught by Marty Sauceda, Costa Mesa. Lots of limits of smaller fish. Crappies and bass are fairly active. Catfish to about 10 pounds remain active, and there are limits or near-limits regularly on cut mackerel. Bass fishermen using crankbaits, spinnerbaits and plastic worms are doing well in early mornings.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Catfish limits are coming “with relative ease,” according to lake officials. But the fish have been on the small side--an 8 1/2-pounder tops the week’s list.

CORONA LAKE--Catfish are biting and Mike Bradshaw, Riverside, caught a 30-pounder. Crappies are also active.

OSO RESERVOIR--Top bass, an 8 1/2-pounder by Greg Olsen, Placentia, one of 30 or so fish he caught on a lure he didn’t identify. Most crankbaits and surface plugs are effective, however. The catfish bite is just as good for fish to 12 pounds.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Shoreline access has improved and so has the fishing for catfish, especially at night. Mackerel best bet. The largemouth bass bite has slowed, but a 10-pounder was caught by Zach Warfield, Fountain Valley, on a Rat-L-Trap. Bluegills are biting on mealworms and night crawlers.

LAKE PERRIS--No big bass, but lots of 14- to 17-inchers, which are biting on top-water lures in early mornings and on night crawlers fished on the bottom during the day. Bluegills remain active at Bernesconi Beach and the island, where mini-jigs and mealworms are doing the trick.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass are active near Ramp 1, biting on top-water plugs in early mornings and anchovies and chicken livers. An 11-2 striper was caught on a swim-bait by Clint Torres, Murrieta. Some catfish.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Fishing is slow but local angler Rick Shudard caught a six-pound largemouth bass on a top-water lure at Juniper Point, and Art Doyle, Loma Linda, caught a four-pound catfish on mackerel at Metcalf Bay.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Trout fishing is superb and the list of lunkers--topped by a seven-pounder hauled in by Floyd Crowell, West Covina--is a long one. Green Power Bait and night crawlers have worked best.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--A 14 1/4-pound largemouth bass was caught at Hodges by Rick Crawford, Vista, who used a plastic worm. Fair bites are in progress at Hodges, Lower Otay, Sutherland and El Capitan. The best overall action is at Lower Otay, where 4,400 bluegills were caught.

CUYAMACA LAKE--Heavy trout plants this week have improved the bite. Inflated night crawlers and chartreuse Power Bait have been working best. Largemouth bass are biting best on shiners and white spinnerbaits.

EASTERN SIERRA--Bishop-area anglers are doing well in upper Bishop Creek Canyon, with South Lake the best bet for bigger fish but all lakes producing. Most Mammoth Lakes lakes and the lakes of the June Loop are fair to good. The top reservoir in the Eastern Sierra, however, remains Bridgeport Reservoir, where Power Bait and inflated night crawlers are taking limits of one- to four-pound rainbows and browns. Trollers using flashers-crawler combos near the dam are also doing well. East Walker River flows are down and fishing is up, with fly fishermen battling 22-inch rainbows and browns and lure fishermen catching them up to six pounds. The West Walker isn’t bad, either, for fly fishermen using hoppers to catch cutthroat and rainbows. Kirmin Lake is fair for brook trout (woolly bugger flies), but improving.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--64 anglers (3 boats): 105 albacore, 4 lingcod, 90 red rockcod, 200 rockcod, 330 rockfish, 2 halibut, 1 barracuda.

PORT SAN LUIS (Patriot Sportfishing)--13 anglers (1 boat): 55 albacore.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--58 anglers (3 boats): 105 calico bass, 8 sand bass, 4 halibut, 1 bonito, 4 sculpin, 8 barracuda, 32 whitefish, 8 lingcod, 135 red snapper, 237 rockfish.

VENTURA (Captain Hook Sportlanding)--16 anglers (1 boat): 1 calico bass, 23 rockfish, 2 sheephead, 6 yellowtail, 2 bonito.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--53 anglers (3 boats): 152 yellowtail, 2 whitefish, 14 sculpin, 35 rockfish, 14 red snapper, 1 barracuda. (Gold Coast)--8 anglers (1 boat): 3 barracuda, 6 bonito, 40 calico bass, 33 yellowtail, 1 triggerfish.
