TIMES STAFF AND WIRES

Have a craving for ox tongue and currants? How about quail eggs or trout “pasties”? You’re in luck--they’re on the menu this fall and winter at Britain’s Hampton Court Palace outside London.

During nighttime tours by lamplight, visitors can sample Tudor canapes and sip mulled wine while watching a “kitchen boy” prepare and explain dishes that might have filled the ample stomach of the palace’s master, Henry VIII. They also tour the State Apartments and other rooms, including the so-called Haunted Gallery, where Henry’s fifth wife, Catherine Howard, is said to have run screaming before her beheading.

The tours begin at 5:30, 6 and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from Oct. 31 to Dec. 22. The cost is about $37 per person (regular daytime tours are about $16). For reservations, call 011-44-181-781-9540 or fax toll-free (800) 688-0366.
