Israeli Arabs, Police Hurt in Clash Over Land

Share

More than 50 protesters, along with 15 police officers, were injured Sunday in riots that broke out in an Israeli Arab village after police tried to evacuate land the army has claimed for a firing range.

Residents of Muawiya village near the northern Israeli town of Umm al-Fahm battled police for hours with stones and Molotov cocktails as officers fired tear gas and rubber-coated bullets.

Late Sunday, an agreement was announced to allow the disputed land to remain in the hands of the villagers until the end of the year while officials try to reach an acceptable compromise.
