Judge Allows Road Extension to Resume

A judge dealt a blow Monday to city officials and residents who oppose a controversial road leading into the new Dos Vientos development.

Ventura County Superior Court Judge David W. Long ordered the city to allow builders to resume work on the Borchard Road extension. Answering objections from residents who fear the road will be too steep for safety--a 12% grade, which exceeds the city code limit by 7%--the city had issued a stop-work order, prompting developers to file suit.

“We’re obviously very pleased to get this ruling, and we’re anxious to get back to what we really want to do, which is to move forward on the Dos Vientos Ranch project,” said developer Arlen Miller of the Miller Brothers, which claimed it could lose as much as $50 million in sales while the road remained unfinished.

City Atty. Mark Sellers said it was up to the City Council to decide to appeal the judge’s ruling or accept the Borchard Road plan and pursue other safety options.

Despite the city’s defeat, attorney Edward Masry, who represents two citizen groups in the suit, said he will continue to try to stop the road project.
