Students Break for Annual Fun Camp

With spring break in full gear for Moorpark Unified School District students, dozens of kids found themselves at the Boys & Girls Club’s annual Fun Camp on Monday.

And that was OK with them.

Eleven-year-old Tyler Randall was having trouble getting up Monday morning, until he realized classes were out for the week.

“I just remembered I didn’t have to go to school, and then I said, ‘Oh yeah!’ and grabbed my clothes,” he said.

The club on Casey Road is providing children ages 7 to 14 with movies, games, sports and other activities as part of its weeklong camp, said program director Denise Duarte.

Duarte said strong recommendations from the children who regularly go to the center and their parents have enabled the club to expand their spring break activities this year.

“We don’t do a lot of marketing, as much as we should be doing, so it’s mostly word-of-mouth,” she said. “So a lot of kids will come to our camp and tell their friends to, or parents will hear about us from other parents.”

With 50 children this year, a 10% increase over last year’s attendance, Duarte said the camp adds more participants as well as activities each year.

“Every year you learn a little bit more about what you’re doing and things run a little easier,” she said.
