Oversight Panel Planned if Bond Issue Passes

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles City Council agreed Wednesday to create a civilian panel that will oversee a $744-million bond issue for the police and fire departments, if voters approve it next week.
The fire and police bond, which is on Tuesday’s ballot as Proposition 1, would help increase response time by paramedics, firefighters and police officers. It would allow construction of six police stations and one bureau and traffic office; construction of one new fire station and the replacement of 17 others; replacement and expansion of the 911 dispatch center; expansion and renovation of the police crime lab and remodeling of Parker Center, among other things.
Under the lawmakers’ action Wednesday, the mayor and the council would appoint five members of an oversight committee, a program manager from an outside firm and a program director.
