Cappuccilli’s 27th Homer Lifts Edison

Edison’s Tony Cappuccilli hit his 27th career homer Wednesday as the Chargers defeated Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World, 14-6, in the consolation championship of the Thermal Coachella Valley baseball tournament.

Cappuccilli, who hit nine home runs each of the past two seasons, hit his ninth in the second inning to help the Chargers to a 2-0 lead. Cappuccilli is within two home runs of the county record set by Gerald Laird of La Quinta from 1995-98.

Bryce Popoff led Edison with two home runs, a double and eight RBIs.

In the third-place game:

Dana Hills 8, Indio La Quinta 7--Parker Jarvis was three for four with an RBI in the third-place game for Dana Hills, which won an earlier game, 10-0, in five innings against Indio. Rich Sorenson (5-1) earned the victory in both games for the Dolphins (9-5).

In the West Coast Classic:

Calvary Chapel 2, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 1--Randy Blood had two hits, driving in both runs for the Eagles (11-1), who advance to today’s semifinals. Blood’s two-out double in the fifth scored Matt Mossberg for the victory in San Jose.

In the Santa Maria Righetti softball tournament:

No. 2 Foothill 1, Fresno Bullard 0 (8)--Elizabeth Bendig singled in the winning run in an international tiebreaker to earn Foothill (15-3) the championship over the Bullard (27-1), the state’s top-ranked team.
