Described by Henry Miller as “the eye of Paris,” French photographer Brassai (born Gyula Halasz in Hungary) documented Paris during the 1920s and ‘30s in such a compelling way that his images have shaped the way we view Paris today. “Brassai: The Eye of Paris,” a retrospective exhibition that opened earlier this week at the J. Paul Getty Museum, will feature more than 110 photographs of Parisian life, including portraits of famous expatriates Miller, Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti; a selection of drawings and sculptures; and Brassai’s 1932 publication, “Paris by Night.”

* “Brassai: The Eye of Paris,” J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Center, 1200 Getty Center Drive, Brentwood. Ends July 3. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. free; parking, $5. Reservations required. (310) 440-7300.

Her last appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic was in 1981, and since then, legendary pianist Martha Argerich has played here only twice, in shared performances. Now, with Chopin’s E-minor Concerto, Argerich returns to the Philharmonic, with guest conductor Emmanuel Krivine, for four performances through Sunday afternoon. Krivine’s debut includes Berlioz’s “Roman Carnival” Overture and Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra.”
