Orange County’s Tall Ships

The brig Pilgrim, a full-sized replica of the brig that Richard Henry Dana sailed on in 1834, is 130 feet long and 24 feet wide. It’s docked at the Orange County Marine Institute in Dana Point Harbor. The ship is open Sundays 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; admission is by donation. It is used for school programs during the week. The Pilgrim of Newport is a replica of a 1770s topsail schooner, docked at 2717 W. Coast Highway, next to the Rusty Pelican. It is 118 feet long and 25 feet wide. Owners Susan and Wade Hall conduct three- and five-day expeditions for children in fourth through 12th grades to Santa Catalina Island in conjunction with the Catalina Island Marine Institute.
