Women Who Overcame Homelessness Graduate
Eleven women who overcame the obstacles of homelessness will graduate Saturday from transitional programs offered by the Women’s Care Cottage, a nonprofit homeless women’s shelter.
The women successfully completed either a 90-day program at the shelter or a two-year transitional program. They will be honored in a ceremony from noon to 2 p.m. at the Japanese Garden, 6100 Woodley Ave., in Van Nuys. Los Angeles City Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski is scheduled to speak.
Homeless women who stay at the shelter are required to take vocational classes, attend workshops and participate in job placement services offered there.
Although it opened in 1984, the ceremony is a first for the shelter.
“We want to honor these women who have worked so hard to get back into a position where they are contributing members of society,” said Terry Constantino, programs director for the Women’s Care Cottage.
