Cardinals Lose McGwire, Davis

The St. Louis Cardinals, who open a three-game series at Dodger Stadium on Friday night, may be without Mark McGwire and Eric Davis.

McGwire isn’t expected to play tonight in Milwaukee after leaving the fifth inning of the Cardinals’ 8-3 victory over the Brewers Tuesday night, complaining of a tight left hamstring.

Davis had to leave after being hit in the left hand by an Eric Plunk pitch and he isn’t sure about his status.

“It was a tough game,” Cardinal Manager Tony La Russa said. “We invested a lot of production, a lot of personnel, a lot of clutch stuff to win it. I’m a little concerned about Eric Davis, so I’m not in a great mood.”

McGwire, who has five home runs, was 0 for 2 with a walk when he left in the fifth on a damp night. The start of the game was delayed 61 minutes by rain.

McGwire, who saved two runs with a diving stop of Sean Berry’s shot down the right-field line to end the first, said he felt the tightness after running out a double-play ball that ended the fourth.

Davis was taken for X-rays, and the team said his injury was only a bruise.

Houston 10, Chicago Cubs 4--Richard Hidalgo and Mitch Meluskey hit back-to-back homers and Carl Everett drove in three runs as the Cubs beat the Astros at Chicago.

Sammy Sosa hit his third homer and first of the season at Wrigley Field.

Arizona 8, Philadelphia 1--Randy Johnson (2-1) struck out 10 to get his first home win for the Diamondbacks, who got eight early runs and moved above .500 for the first time since they started play last year.

Florida 7, San Francisco 2--Brian Meadows (3-0) gave up two runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings at San Francisco and the Marlins ended a four-game losing streak.

Pittsburgh 7, San Diego 3--Adrian Brown blooped a bases-loaded, tiebreaking single off Trevor Hoffman with one out in the 10th inning and the visiting Pirates won their fourth in a row.

Montreal at Colorado, ppd.--A fatal shooting at a Denver-area high school caused the postponement of the game, which will be made up as part of a split doubleheader when the Expos return to Colorado for a three-games series Aug. 13-15, but the exact date was not set.
