Representatives of an accrediting commission team for the Western Assn. of Schools and Colleges visited Saddleback College on Thursday to hear progress reports, but did not issue a verdict on their daylong observations. But what they were told in at least one meeting seemed to underscore a common theme: The college is working on reducing hostility and improving morale on campus, but efforts by the South County Community College District Board of Trustees have been lacking.

The staffing and morale problems at Saddleback and Irvine Valley colleges stem from a 1997 administrative restructuring and what many described as a tendency by the board to micromanage both campuses.

The team will write a report on its findings and take it to the accrediting commission at its June meeting, where the commission could make a decision on the college’s status.
