Professor Must Do a Month’s Work as Dirty-Home Penalty
A Cal State Long Beach professor convicted of allowing her home in an upscale waterfront community to fall into a blighted state was ordered to do 30 days of community service.
Elena Zagustin, convicted Nov. 2 of 69 health, safety and building code violations at her Huntington Harbour home, was in a Westminster courtroom Friday to report to a judge monitoring the probationer’s progress in cleaning up the house.
Superior Court Judge Robert H. Gallivan said Zagustin had made considerable progress before her meeting with him in January but not much since.
Gallivan ordered Zagustin to do a month of community service by Aug. 23. Failing that, he said, he would send her to jail for 30 days.
Gallivan also denied a request by attorneys for Huntington Beach that Zagustin make restitution for inspection costs.
Zagustin was given a June 21 trial date for some code violations at the home that had been pending for some time.
