Nature is great and all. But admit it, wouldn’t camping be a tad more comfy if a maid nipped by each day to tidy your tent, if the potty facilities featured heated floors, if a waiter brought you breakfast in your sleeping bag?

Then consider Costanoa, a “camping resort” that marries hotel comforts with a wilderness locale. It lies 20 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1, near the town of Pescadero and acres of protected forests and shoreline.

At the end of May, Joie de Vivre Hospitality, a spunky San Francisco hotel company, plans to open the resort’s lodge (40 rooms with private baths, $185 to $275 nightly) and 12 cabins ($175 to $200). In June, 126 tent bungalows are due to follow. The deluxe tents (pictured, at $115 to $135) are designed to evoke the grand campsites of the 1930s. (Economy tents are $55 to $65.) Guests share restrooms outfitted with fireplaces, hot tubs and multiple shower stalls. Also planned: picnic grounds, grilling areas and bicycle rentals.
