Ten Ventura County public schools have been designated among the best in the state by the California State School Recognition Program.

On Monday, Delaine Eastin, state superintendent of public instruction, announced 94 middle schools and 64 high schools as 1999 California Distinguished Schools. The awards, which alternate between elementary and secondary schools, are intended to honor schools that set examples in teaching and learning, use of technology, safety and community involvement.

In the Conejo Valley Unified School District, Lindero Canyon and Redwood middle schools and Newbury Park High were named distinguished schools. Oak Park Unified’s Medea Creek Middle School was also a winner. In Los Angeles County, Agoura and Calabasas high schools in the Las Virgenes School District were honored.
