Stars, Specials and Premieres Mark Beginning of Sweeps

The first weekend of May sweeps finds the premiere of three documentary series plus the appearance of several guest stars on your favorite shows.

Christine Baranski plays a sophisticated shrink who has a new radio show on the NBC comedy “Frasier,” tonight at 9.

Monty Hall guests as himself on ABC’s “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” Friday at 9 p.m.

That furry alien Alf pops up on “Love Boat: The Next Wave,” Friday at 9 p.m. on UPN.

“Battlefield: Vietnam,” Friday at 9 p.m. on KCET-TV, is a six-week documentary examining key military battles of the Vietnam War.

ABC premieres its Saturday morning animated children’s series “Mickey MouseWorks,” at 11 a.m. The series features such Disney faves as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto.

David Wolper is the producer of CNN’s 10-part documentary series “Celebrate the Century,” Sunday at 6 and 9 p.m. Christopher Plummer narrates the series, which examines the world over the last 100 years.

Civil rights activist Rosa Parks and John Ritter guest on CBS’ “Touched by an Angel,” Sunday at 8 p.m.

“Wild Europe,” Sunday at 8 p.m. on KCET-TV, is a six-hour travelogue and natural history show that explores wildlife in two dozen countries.

Specials

“AMC Swings! Featuring Cherry Poppin’ Daddies,” tonight at 7, features the hit swing group in concert.

Fox presents “Robbie Knievel: Grand Canyon Jump” tonight at 8. The daredevil tries to jump the famed canyon on his motorcycle.

Rosie O’Donnell returns for her third year as host of the 12th annual “Kids’ Choice Awards,” Saturday at 8 p.m. on Nickelodeon. Kids get to choose their favorites in TV, movies, music and sports.

KCET-TV repeats the documentary series “Chicano! History of the Mexican-American Civil Rights Movement,” Sunday at noon. Following at 4 p.m. is an encore of “The Fight in the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers’ Struggle.”

Movies

Corbin Bernsen and Lesley-Anne Down headline the Fox Family Channel romantic comedy “Young Hearts Unlimited,” Sunday at 8 p.m.

Jon Voight, Mary Steenburgen, James Coburn and F. Murray Abraham star in NBC’s lavish four-hour version of the story of “Noah’s Ark,” Sunday and Monday at 9 p.m.
