City Council members are reviewing recommendations from a citizen advisory board on how to spend more than $1.5 million in federal funds for low- and moderate-income neighborhoods in preparation for a study session on May 17. Organizations dedicated to public service are eligible to receive up to $292,800 of the amount distributed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. There is not enough money to meet every group’s needs, said Dean Allison, chairman of the Citizen Participation Advisory Board. “It’s very difficult to say no,” he said, “but we must say no to some.” Some of the organizations passed over by the board this year are the Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter, Someone Cares Soup Kitchen and West County Family YMCA. The council will make its decisions in June, said Gus Duran, the city’s housing and redevelopment manager.
