Four people on their way to the Bahamas were killed Wednesday when their small plane crashed into a neighborhood shortly after takeoff.

The single-engine Cessna 210 crashed between three homes near Vero Beach Municipal Airport, where the pilot had attempted to return after reporting mechanical trouble.

The plane lost its wings as it hit a tree and a power pole before landing in the neighborhood and bursting into flames. No one on the ground was injured.

“You could hear the people moaning and we tried to help,” said Keith Chisholm. “But at that point there was nothing we could do.”

The plane was registered to John Tinthoff of Peoria, Ill., and officials said he was aboard the aircraft.
