A 14-year-old boy walked into a Canadian high school Wednesday and shot two 17-year-olds, killing one, police said.

A suspect was taken into custody at W.R. Myers High School by a police officer who works at the school. Police declined to release any other details.

The wounded teenager underwent surgery, said Mark Gregory, a spokesman for Lethbridge Regional Hospital.

Despite media reports that the shooter was wearing a trenchcoat, several students said he was simply wearing the knee-length winter jacket he always wore.

They identified the shooter as a ninth-grader who had dropped out and was being taught at home in this farming community southeast of Calgary in the Alberta province.

“He said he’s been really distressed,” said student Matt Anderson. “He didn’t have very many friends.”
