The Police Department’s pilot program to catch red-light runners with cameras missed its Aug. 1 launch date last weekend but should go into effect in the next few months. “The program has been delayed due to contract negotiations between the camera vendors and the city,” said traffic Sgt. Denny Jenner. “We expect to have it up and running within 30 to 90 days.”

Under the program, cameras at two Alton Parkway intersections will monitor traffic where it crosses Muirlands and Gateway boulevards. A video camera will be used for one intersection and a digital camera will be used at the other, Jenner said.

Once installed, each camera will photograph the license plates of vehicles entering the intersection after a light has turned red. Records from the Department of Motor Vehicles will then be used to issue a citation by mail.
