Elizabeth Taylor received the Angel Award at Project Angel Food’s July 10 fund-raiser. About 650 people attended the 10th anniversary event, raising $500,000 for the group’s efforts to deliver food to people with AIDS. Comedy writer Bruce Vilanch opened the evening and gave the shirt off his back (an Elizabeth Taylor screen print) for a $2,000 donation. Barry Manilow performed, and Project Angel Food clients Brian Lowe and Avalina Lamas presented the award to Taylor. Others in attendance included Jimmy Smits, Whoopi Golberg, Camryn Manheim, Vana and Bob Farina, Barry Karas, producer-director Paris Barclay, director Randall Kleiser, actress Judith Light and her husband, Robert Desiderio, who is chairman of the Project Angel Food board, actress Anna Marie Horsford and John Gile, executive director of Project Angel Food. Tom Byrne, owner of La Cuisine in Los Angeles, donated gourmet food for the evening.

* Washington Mutual’s fourth annual Los Angeles Women’s Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament held July 12 at MountainGate Country Club in Los Angeles raised $130,000 for the Southern California chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. The shotgun start was led by KTTV-TV reporter Christine Devine, who also participated in the tournament with actress Tanya Roberts from Fox’s “That ‘70s Show,” and Mary Grady, CBS-TV Channel 2 reporter. There were 144 participants in the golf tournament, 45 in the tennis tournament. Sponsor KYSR-FM (98.7) conducted a live auction, coordinated by Ken Christensen, in which women bid to play in the tournament with Jamie White, morning show host of the radio station’s “Jamie, Frosty and Frank” show.

* The annual gourmet gala California Spirit XV raised $660,000 for the American Cancer Society on July 11 in the garden of Ron Burkle’s Green Acres estate in Beverly Hills. Nearly 1,000 guests dined outdoors, listened to live music and participated in a silent auction. Jeremiah Sullivan, president and chief operating officer of Macy’s West, was honored at the event for his success as a businessman and his commitment to the community. He has been instrumental in shaping an alliance between Macy’s West and the American Cancer Society in the fight against breast cancer. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month last October, Macy’s sponsored an in-store program, For Her Sake, to educate customers and employees about early detection. The event was hosted by chef Wolfgang Puck, Barbara Lazaroff and Paramount Picture’s Sherry Lansing, chaired by Murray Sommer, Eileen Stringer and Bill Rosenfeld and emceed by KNBC-TV news anchor Paul Moyer.

* Palos Verdes Art Center’s “Last Great Homes Tour of the 20th Century” raised more than $125,000 for its exhibitions and education and outreach programs July 9-11. About 500 guests attended the July 9 gala at Villa LaBarba, home of Georgene McKim and Jim LaBarba. On July 10 and 11, more than 2,700 people toured the villa plus four other spectacular Palos Verdes Peninsula homes and gardens. The event was co-chaired by Joanne Austin, Susan Boval, Dottie Lay and Sharon Ryan.
