Memorial services were held in Santa Monica recently for Henry Ross, 63, of Venice, a veteran employee of the Sportsmen’s Lodge. He was chief engineer at the prominent Valley hotel at the time of his death.

A runner, father and a man who took up study of the Japanese language late in life, Ross was remembered as a charismatic figure who constantly urged friends, family and even guests he met at the Lodge to push themselves at all times.

“No pain, no gain,” was Ross’ credo, several speakers said.

Henry Ronald Ross was born March 14, 1936, in San Francisco. He died at home July 19.

Officiating at the July 24 memorial service at Gates, Kingsley & Gates Moeller Murphy’s Santa Monica chapel was Dennis Lundy, a fellow member of the International Union of Operating Engineers at the Lodge in Studio City.
