The village of Woodbridge said goodbye to some of its oldest residents Thursday as work crews cut down the last of 56 sickly eucalyptus trees along Eastshore.

A 1998 study found the eucalyptus trees were in various stages of decay and were potential hazards, officials said. The trees, kept at a height of 70 feet, have shown signs of root rot and are slowly dying from the top down, the study found.

The close proximity of the sick trees to Firwood Park and Eastshore Elementary caused city officials to worry about the safety of students, pedestrians and bike riders passing through the area.
