Denver Comes From Behind Down Under

Playing in Stadium Australia, the 110,000-seat venue for next summer’s Olympics in Sydney, the Denver Broncos rallied from a 17-0 deficit today to defeat the San Diego Chargers, 20-17, before 72,811.

Chris Miller directed two late Bronco drives and completed 11 of 13 passes. Starter Bubby Brister was two of five and had his first pass intercepted and backup Brian Griese had an interception returned 51 yards for a touchdown by linebacker Gerald Dixon.

In other games: Cade McNown played three series, one more than planned, but completed only two of six passes for 24 yards as the Chicago Bears beat the Indianapolis Colts, 9-6, at Chicago. McNown, who signed last Monday, had practiced only six times. . . . In a game featuring Los Angeles’ two former teams, the Oakland Raiders beat the St. Louis Rams, 18-17, at St. Louis. New Raider quarterback Rich Gannon completed seven of 10 passes for 68 yards.

New England linebacker Ted Johnson, who sat out the end of last season because of an injured right arm, may be sidelined the entire season because of an injury to his left arm, which he suffered during a scrimmage. . . . The New York Jets signed veteran kick returner Dwight Stone.
