Bullfrogs Clinch Conference Title

The Bullfrogs clinched the Western Conference title Saturday night, defeating the Las Vegas Coyotes, 9-2, in Roller Hockey International play in Las Vegas.

Hugo Belanger scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Bullfrogs (18-3-2), who earned a first-round bye in the playoffs. Belanger, the league’s leading scorer with 71 points, extended his scoring streak to 20 games.

Dan Shermerhorn also had two goals and an assist and Tom Menicci assisted on four goals.

Bullfrog goalie Rob Laurie stopped 31 of 33 shots, including all three Coyote power-play chances to pick up his league-leading 15th victory. of the season, matching his previous career-high set in 1996.

The Coyotes fall to 15-6-2. The Bullfrogs next game is Friday in Dallas.

SPEEDWAY

Brad Oxley of San Juan Capistrano won the four-lap scratch main event and the eight-lap handicap main in speedway motorcycle racing before 6,307 at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Costa Mesa’s Bobby Schwartz was second in both races.

HOCKEY

Disney ICE will host the Fedorin Cup Charity game at 7 p.m. Aug. 25. The event was named after Eric Fedorin, a 36-year-old Southern California hockey player who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1998. Proceeds will go to the NHL Hockey Fights Cancer Fund and a fund for Fedorin’s 8-year-old daughter, Erin.
