A drag racer was sentenced to Caltrans duty and placed on probation Monday after pleading no contest to criminal charges stemming from a May 9 race in Sun Valley.

Mike Qualls, a spokesman with the Los Angeles city attorney’s office, said an LAPD helicopter spotted three cars racing on Glenoaks Boulevard near Tuxford Street in the early morning hours. Ground patrol officers were called and arrested three people.

Carlos Cerin, 20, of the Wilshire district, and Starly Aroche, 18, pleaded no contest to one count of aiding and abetting a speed race, according to Qualls. Cerin was sentenced Monday to 65 days on a Caltrans work crew.
