The Planning Commission at tonight’s meeting will consider a proposal to build 183 houses at Rose Drive and Alta Vista Street on a 51-acre lot with 34 oil wells.

Thirteen of the oil wells are not in operation, and the remaining 21 wells will be closed, according to city documents. If the project is approved, the city will require the developer to provide paperwork showing that the oil wells are not operating before construction begins. Developers also must prove that the soil in the area is not contaminated. None of the houses proposed are to be built on top of an old oil well site.

As part of the proposal, the developers have requested that the property, which is zoned for commercial use and as oil reserve land, be redesignated low-density residential.

The city’s development services department has recommended the commissioners approve the project. The Planning Commission’s vote will be forwarded to the City Council as a recommendation.
