SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Tires were slashed on more than two dozen vehicles parked in an Orange neighborhood over the weekend, authorities said Monday.

Police said vandals punctured one to four tires on each of 26 vehicles parked near East Briardale and Palmdale avenues between midnight and 1 a.m. Sunday. Police said the vandals probably used small knives to puncture the tires.

“This is an unusual act,” Orange Police Lt. Art Romo said. “It’s not your normal type of thing that occurs in a city.”

One resident, James Wohrman, said he recently bought new tires for his car and was irate to discover Sunday morning that three had been slashed.

“I was a really unhappy camper,” he said. “It’s going to cost me $115 per tire.”

Wohrman said that several of his neighbors complained to police, and a stream of tow trucks pulled into the neighborhood Sunday afternoon to tow the damaged vehicles to local shops for repairs. Police officers knocked on doors in search of owners of the vandalized vehicles.

Police did not have any suspects Monday afternoon and had not determined the final cost of the damage. The vandals, if caught and convicted, could face prison time, Romo said, because causing more than $1,000 in damage is a felony.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Orange Police Department, (714) 744-7403.
