Espadas Records Early Knockout
Featherweight Guty Espadas of Merida, Mexico stretched his winning streak to 10 with a first-round knockout against Prangky Mamuaya of Indonesia in the 10-round main event Monday night at the Arrowhead Pond.
Espadas (30-2, 20 knockouts), who is ranked fourth in the featherweight division by the World Boxing Council, sent Mamuaya to the canvas with a series of body shots.
Mamuaya (20-7-1), who is a former Indonesian champion, got back to his feet, but Espadas renewed the assault and referee Lou Filippo stopped the fight 2 minutes 17 seconds into the opening round.
In the 10-round co-main event, junior featherweight Israel Vazquez of Mexico City knocked out Venezuela’s Nelson Medina at 1:26 of the seventh round.
Vazquez (21-2, 17 knockouts) scored a knockdown midway through the opening round, but Medina’s awkward style kept him at bay until consecutive lefts to the body sent Medina backpedaling in Round seven. Vazquez followed with a four-punch combination to end the bout.
