ANGELS / THE WEEK AHEAD

Share

TODAY--WEDNESDAY

VS. CLEVELAND

* Schedule: 7 tonight, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

* Television: Fox Sports West, both games.

* Radio: KLAC (570), XPRS (1090), both games.

* Pitching matchups: Chuck Finley (6-10, 5.48) vs. Mark Langston (1-1, 4.99) tonight; Steve Sparks (5-8, 4.88) vs. Dave Burba (8-7, 4.90) Wednesday.

* Last series: Cleveland won two of three in the opening series of the season. The Indians have gone on to a double-digit lead in the AL Central and are expected to win their fifth straight division title. Since the Indians began their run of titles in 1995, they are 24-19 against the Angels.

* About the Indians: The Angels have nothing on Cleveland when it comes to injuries. Former Katella High standout Jaret Wright had to leave Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay with pain in his right shoulder and was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday. He was there from July 19-Aug. 3 for the same injury. Enrique Wilson (sprained left thumb) also had to leave the game. Wilson is playing third base because Travis Fryman is out with a knee injury. Others unavailable include catcher Sandy Alomar (knee), outfielder Kenny Lofton (hamstring) and outfielder Mark Whiten (foot). But there is plenty of firepower left.

FRIDAY-SUNDAY

AT DETROIT

* Schedule: 4 p.m. Friday; 1 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m. Sunday.

* Television: Channel 9 Friday; Channel 11 Saturday; Channel 9 Sunday.

* Radio: KLAC (570), XPRS (1090).

* Last series: The Angels lost two of three in early May, winning only the third game of the series, 4-1, on home runs by Mo Vaughn and Darin Erstad. This will be the Angels’ last visit to 87-year-old Tiger Stadium. Detroit’s new stadium opens in April.

* About the Tigers: The Angels will be facing a team struggling as much as they are. Like the Angels, Detroit expected to be competitive and perhaps challenge for a wild-card spot. Like the Angels, Detroit is last in its division (AL Central) and its players are doing some finger-pointing. The Tigers have three games at AL West leader Texas before meeting the Angels.
