A 72-year-old man with a knife who allegedly tried to break into his estranged wife’s Ventura home was shot twice by police with sandbag rounds, authorities said.

Marvin Castleberry Jr. was bruised during the incident and was treated by a doctor and booked into jail, authorities said. He remained in custody Tuesday night in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Officers were called to Castleberry’s wife’s home in the 300 block of South Joanne Street after Castleberry allegedly shattered several windows while trying to get inside, authorities said.

Castleberry’s wife was at home during the incident but was unharmed.

Castleberry refused to surrender when officers arrived, so Ventura Police Cpl. Dave Wilson fired a sandbag round from a shotgun and used pepper spray on him, Sgt. Bob Velez said.

Castleberry was stunned but lunged at another officer with his knife, Velez said. Castleberry also picked up a loose brick from a planter box and was about to hurl it when Wilson fired again, Velez said.

Officers rushed Castleberry and wrestled him to the ground, Velez said. He was booked on suspicion of assault against a peace officer, terrorism and violating a court order.

Castleberry’s wife has a restraining order preventing him from coming to the home or being near her, authorities said.

Police Lt. Bill Bogner said the couple have had long-standing problems and that authorities had been called to the home on prior occasions.

“She’s quite concerned about her well-being,” Bogner said of the victim. “She just doesn’t want him around.”
