Astacio Charged With Assault on Wife

Colorado Rockies pitcher Pedro Astacio was arrested Thursday when he turned himself in to police after an alleged altercation with his estranged wife at Greenwood Village, Colo.

Astacio faced charges of third-degree assault and domestic violence, reports said.

Police Lt. Joe Carns said a 911 call came in Wednesday night. A woman said her estranged husband had been arguing with her and she advised him to leave.

The suspect, later identified as Astacio, had left his suburban house by the time officers arrived, but turned himself in about 4 p.m.

As expected, Milwaukee Brewer Manager Phil Garner was fired and General Manager Sal Bando was reassigned in a shake-up of the perennially underachieving team. The Brewers are 52-60 and appear headed to their seventh consecutive losing season.

Hitting coach Jim Lefebvre was appointed interim manager.

Philadelphia Phillie ace Curt Schilling did not throw Thursday and was scratched from his next start in Cincinnati.

Schilling is suffering from a biceps injury and muscle spasms in his neck and shoulder blades.

Outfielder Curtis Goodwin, claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays off waivers from the Chicago Cubs last week, told the team he is retiring and left the Blue Jays. Goodwin, 26, hitless in eight at-bats with Toronto, left Manager Jim Fregosi a note that said he didn’t feel he fit in with the club. . . . Jim “Catfish” Hunter remained conscious and in critical condition, four days after the Hall of Fame pitcher fell and hit his head on concrete steps at his home at Greenville, N.C. . . . Montreal Expo President Claude Brochu set Sept. 30 as the deadline for the team’s partners to buy his 7.2% share of the team, worth about $10 million. . .World Series ticket prices will remain the same this year after doubling last season, but fans will pay as much as 40% more to attend the league championship series.
