Heads Up: Picture of Cyclists Sans Helmets Was Irresponsible

Share

I appreciate The Times having an article on bicycling (“Breezy Riders,” by Wendy Thermos, Aug. 5). I do not think you are doing anyone any favors, though, with the cover picture (shown at right) that shows no helmets on the riders.

I believe that children are required to wear helmets. As for the adults, well, as one who has broken two helmets in his life, I believe that people who ride without them are making a statement that they have nothing to protect.

As a public health professional who knows that it is essential to wear protective gear, especially in a congested city such as this, I feel it is irresponsible of The Times to use such a picture to lead a story.

The Times should use its access to millions of people to aid the dissemination of a healthful lifestyle in all respects, including portraying recreational activities safely. The families of the many brain-injured bicycle riders will undoubtedly agree with this criticism.

Is the pavement soft and the heads hard in Long Beach? The picture gives a very wrong impression of responsible and safe bike riding at best and a “third finger salute” to those of us who do wear helmets.

Do your editors show any common sense in allowing this picture to represent “perfect . . . summer wheeling”?
