Orange County Aquatics (ORCA) won the Junior Olympics boys’ water polo 18-and-under division at San Jose, defeating San Diego Shores, 8-7, in the gold-medal game. Former Villa Park standout Nick Pacelli, who will be a freshman at UCLA, scored his third goal with 1 minute 12 seconds remaining to break a 7-7 tie. Pacelli was tournament MVP.

Former IBF junior lightweight champion Arturo Gatti made a successful debut as a junior welterweight, scoring a first-round knockout of Reyes Munoz at Mashantucket, Conn.

Motor Sports

Shawn McConnell of Brea won the four-lap scratch main in the speedway motorcycle racing event at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa in front of 6,514. Brad Oxley of San Juan Capistrano finished second and John Aden of Apple Valley was third.

Andy Northrup of Alta Loma won the eight-lap handicap main starting from the 50-yard line. Charlie Cooley of Huntington Beach (30) was second and McConnell (60) was third.
