The Volunteer Center Assistance League of Southern California is seeking volunteers Aug. 28 for an opening day celebration at Hansen Dam. Participants will help vendors, work with security and register volunteers and guests. Volunteers will get free food and T-shirts. The center also needs tutors and mentors for the Kindergarten Intervention Program, which helps students in kindergarten through third grade with academic, social or emotional problems. People to teach woodworking and ceramics classes are needed at the Erikson Center, a Van Nuys residential treatment program for emotionally disabled adults. Call Joan Kagan at (818) 908-5128.

Guides are needed by the Assistance League of Southern California. Docents will give tours at Design House, an estate in Hancock Park open to the public in October. Training will be provided Sept. 23 at 9:30 a.m. at the Design House. For more information, call (323) 469-1973, Ext. 417.

TrinityCare Hospice in Van Nuys needs volunteers to provide patient care, comfort to families, grief counseling and office help. Participants also play musical instruments for patients and take pets to visit them. Training is in late September. Call Lianne Casselman at (818) 785-1800.

The Child and Family Guidance Center in Northridge is seeking English- and Spanish-speaking therapist aides, classroom aides and office help. Participants should volunteer three hours a week for at least six months. Training is provided. Call (818) 993-9311, Ext. 319.

Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar is seeking people to raise future guide dogs. Volunteers raise 2-month-old puppies in their homes, teaching them obedience and taking them wherever they go. When the dogs become about 18 months old, the volunteers return the canines to Guide Dogs to begin training. Call (818) 362-5834.
