Oakland’s Phillips Breaks Leg

Tony Phillips, who helped spark Oakland’s run at the AL wild-card spot, broke his left leg sliding into second base Sunday and will miss the rest of the season.

Phillips was trying to break up a double play during the Athletics’ 9-5 win over Toronto when he broke the fibula in his lower leg.

Phillips, 40, was batting .244 with 15 home runs and 49 runs batted in from the leadoff spot.

San Diego Padre pitcher Brian Boehringer will likely have surgery Tuesday for a partial tear in his right rotator cuff, discovered during an MRI Saturday. . . . The Seattle Mariners placed outfielder John Mabry on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, with a broken right kneecap suffered after fouling a ball of the knee in a game Friday. He will be out four to six weeks.

Arizona first baseman Travis Lee will be sidelined for three to five weeks after spraining his left ankle while fielding balls in the outfield during batting practice. The Diamondbacks said Lee sustained a moderate sprain. X-rays showed no broken bones. . . . Darryl Strawberry hit a home run for the first time in his comeback bid with the triple-A Columbus Clippers. Although the league has cleared him to play after a drug-related suspension in April, Strawberry is recovering from knee surgery and it’s uncertain when he’ll join the Yankees.
