Contract Awarded for LAX Tunnel Extension
A $35.3-million contract for extension of the Sepulveda Boulevard tunnel under runways and taxiways at Los Angeles International Airport was awarded Tuesday to the Kiewit Pacific construction company in Santa Fe Springs.
The project, which will add 165 feet to the north end of the existing 1,900-foot tunnel, will permit realignment of narrow and frequently congested taxiways near United Airlines’ Terminal 6.
Work is expected to begin in October and last about 18 months.
Engineers said the project will be phased so the six-lane tunnel will remain fully open during daylight hours. However, some night closures are anticipated.
