THE SAFETY ZONE: RESTAURANT REPORT

The environmental health division of Orange County’s Health Care Agency performs routine, unannounced inspections of the county’s more than 11,000 restaurants, markets and other food establishments. When conditions violate state law or applicable county and municipal codes, inspectors can issue notices of violation. If inspectors find during an announced recheck that conditions have not been corrected, they can effectively close the business by suspending its health permit. Health permits are reinstated as soon as the situation is corrected. Here is a rundown for July:

* Restaurant: MAG Import Direct Discount, 4321 E. Chapman Ave., Orange

Date closed: July 1. Not reopened. Owner reported he has abandoned the facility.

Reasons cited: Operating without an approved health permit; no site plans submitted to plan check.

* Restaurant: El Tapatio Grill, 3700 W. Warner Ave., Santa Ana

Dates closed: July 6-7

Reasons cited: Heavy cockroach infestation in kitchen and storage areas.

* Restaurant: B B Restaurant, 880 W. Lincoln Blvd., Anaheim

Dates closed: July 6-7

Reasons cited: No hot water.

* Restaurant: Jo Jo’s Pizza Kitchen, 955 E. Birch St., Brea

Dates closed: July 7-8

Reasons cited: Failure to comply with provisions of March 10 hearing; poor food temperatures; improper hand washing; improper sanitizing of utensils.

Dates closed: July 7-9

Reasons cited: Lack of hot water to the facility.

Reasons cited: Failure to maintain potentially hazardous foods at required holding temperatures; rodent droppings; poor sanitation throughout food preparation areas; failure to properly sanitize multiuse kitchen and customers utensils.
