The Report Card: Report is mailed to you for free by a realty agent or mortgage lender who has signed up with (and paid) the School Report. But first you must provide the company with your name, phone numbers, mailing address, e-mail address, etc.

Up to six school districts can be compared in one report, and 138 facts are listed for each district. (In the case of a giant like Los Angeles Unified School District, data is arranged into clusters of schools.) You cannot order information about individual schools.

A report comparing six school systems was a total of 38 pages. Many of the pages are taken up by lists of administrators and addresses and phone numbers for each school in the district.

At the end of each report, an “FYI” section lists notable programs or characteristics of the district or the individual schools.

The School Report tells you in what grades the school districts begin teaching fine arts, music, computers and foreign language. For the secondary schools, the reports list the types of extracurricular activities and sports offered in the district.

Information from the School Report is useful if you are trying to compare different districts before deciding where to look for a house. But if you need information on specific schools within the districts, you won’t get much with this report.

Room for Improvement: For some districts, the FYI page is packed with useful information. Other times the items are unclear or repetitive.

Price: Free.

Rating: 2 1/2 apples.
